Burma : This is the PRIME TIME to press junta

23 November 2009

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) today calls for the world leaders to press the junta to do the national reconciliation.

Burma’s legitimate leader, Aung San Suu Kyi has been calling for the
genuine dialogue to find the solution for the Burma crisis peacefully.

Aung San Suu Kyi once said that “We do not want revenge, we do not think there is anything particularly honourable or admirable about seeking revenge, we want to find a peaceful settlement …we remain committed to dialogue. It may be difficult to get there, but we’re determined to get that. And we’re absolutely confident that we shall get that”.

Recently, Aung San Suu Kyi has sent a letter to the junta’s head
General Than Shwe saying that she would like to co-operate with
the junta for the benefit of the people of Burma and also requesting
to meet him.

“We hope that the dialogue might open the door for peaceful
negotiation on the decade long crisis, paving ways for upholding
respect for human rights everywhere in Burma”, said Myo Thein,
the Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC).

The international community must find ways to strengthen the pressure upon junta to accommodate peaceful democratic transition. The Junta should respond positively to the Aung San Suu Kyi’s humble proposal for the peaceful settlement of Burma crisis through dialogue.

“This is the prime time that international community should push the Burma junta  to cooperate with Aung San Suu Kyi for the interest of the benefit of 57 million Burmese people”, added Khin Maung Win, the Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC).

Shwe-Gone-Daing” Declaration clearly stated that need to place in order to have true national reconciliation in Burma, i.e.

1.      to release all the political prisoners,

2.    to review 2008 Constitution

3.    to allow reopening NLD and ethnic nationalities offices

4.    to implement 1990 election result

5.     to take place political dialogue

“We could say that Shwe-Gone-Daing Declaration is the NLD’s road map for democracy which could yield win-win situation for both Aung San Suu Kyi led democratic groups, the ethnics minorities and Than Shwe led junta”, said U Thint Shwe Thiha, the Patron at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC).

Junta must do fundamental reforms in order to prove itself that they are willing to compromise for the interest of the people in Burma. The Junta must prove itself by action. In the past, too many promises were made, only to be thrown away later.

“International Community should judge the junta acts by observing what the junta do for the national reconciliation,” said Daw Khin Aye Aye Mar, the Patron at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC).
